assignment 2

For my living artist, I chose John Scott. He works primarily in acrylic paint and ink on paper. His work follows a dark, almost creepy theme. Scott views himself as a blue-collar artist and political activist. His work focuses on an apocalyptic world ravaged by war and threatened by destruction. Furthermore, his work interests me because it has this primal yet articulate quality. He uses brash, large brushstrokes and negative space to form an image, often portraits. Many of his pieces have a skull and what I have deemed 'deer man' motifs. His work often takes up the entire page, only leaving white to form shapes. Sometimes, text makes an appearance in his pieces; such as 'abyss', 'I've been tricked', and 'love'.

I find his work beguiling because he can take such a childlike manner of 'carelessness' in his brushstrokes and yet he turns it into something with such deeper, instinctual meanings. His work invokes a deeper, hurt feeling in me.
