ink wash tonal drawing - archive 2 + process photos

Image
archive 2 - objects - birdcages ink wash - 2 archives For the portrait archive, I wanted to do something that had meaning. Coincidentally, I also enjoy drawing female facial features, so I knew I wanted it to be all women. So I decided on feminist symbols throughout history. I was careful when choosing my subjects in order to maintain a diverse collection of timelines and ethnicities.  I knew I wanted the second archive to be something that changed your perception of the first one, so I went with birdcages. It juxtaposes the strong feminism in the first by suggesting they are trapped by something. Whether the women are trapped by societal perceptions of their time, capabilities in activism and advocacy, or something else, I'm not sure. I just enjoyed how different yet connected the two collections look together.  exhibition / process photos

assignment 3

Image
contour line assignment for my piece, I used pencil and ink. I did the sketch in pencil and the completed linework in ink. As the objects get closer to the viewer, I used more ink in my ink-water ratio to add atmospheric perspective. The objects are all things I generally use daily. For my research, I looked at many artists: Giacometti, Mondrian, Matisse and Flemish Still Life.  Flemish still life larger objects in the back of the composition objects often on a table - not floating in space lots of contrasting dark values the majority of each object can be seen even if it is placed behind another object lots of negative space on the table lots of red and pink hues there is often a diamond-shaped composition Matisse simple, hand-drawn lines lots of colour and saturation very shape-based once again, objects are often on a table objects are drawn to scale  fore-shortening heavy use of pattern My favorite pieces of his: Red Interior, Purple Robe, Geraniums Mondrian abstract...
